Most UK universities use the HERA framework to define role grades. But HERA wasn’t built to help you progress. It was built to help institutions grade jobs.

That means the skills, behaviours, and internal shifts required to move between grades are often implied but never made explicit.

I call these the Hidden Curriculum of Progression and they’re exactly what this programme is designed to surface and support.

The Pathway

Your 12-week journey to strategic progression

We follow three core phases:

1) Clarity (Weeks 1–4)

Get clear on what’s required at the next level

  • Learn what changes between grades (including the hidden shifts)

  • Complete a readiness scorecard aligned to your current and aspirational grade (if you haven't done it already)

  • Identify your strengths, gaps, and priorities

2) Competence (Weeks 5–8)

Do the work that proves your readiness

  • Design a targeted development plan

  • Clarify what evidence you need to gather

  • Build the habits, relationships and visibility that support your growth

3) Conviction (Weeks 9–12)

Own your story and get promotion-ready

  • Curate your examples for applications and interviews

  • Refine your language to match the tone of senior roles

  • Practice articulating your value without cringing or feeling gross about 'playing the game'

I’ll be your guide

I’m the Founder of The Hidden Curriculum of Progression and the Progression Pathways tools.

I built this programme because in most institutions, there’s a clear Academic Promotions Pathway but nothing equivalent for Professional Services.

If we want to be taken seriously as peers and partners in shaping the future of Higher Education, then we need to take our careers seriously too. That means moving beyond waiting to be recognised, and instead learning to recognise, name, and evidence our value with credibility and conviction.

I spent 13 years as a Professional Services manager in UK HE, and over the last four years I’ve coached more than 200 HE professionals to step into leadership, secure promotions, and navigate their careers on their own terms.

The truth is: the system isn’t transparent. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay stuck.
